In Memoriam: Patrick Grona

Picture
Peacefully, on January 5, 2011, Patrick Allen (the "P" in M&P Flooring) passed away at the age of 61 years with his family by his side at St. Joseph’s Hospice, after a courageous battle with cancer. Patrick was born in Invermay, Saskatchewan on August 11, 1949. Patrick will be sadly missed by his wife of 41 years Mary Anne (nee: Kaskiw); his daughter Marnie; brother Michael; in-laws Michael and Terri Kaskiw; nieces Alicia and Melissa; nephews Matthew, David and Adam; Laura Mastronardi (Bill Merchel); numerous aunts and uncles; plus many cousins (Grona, Berezowski, Chicorli, etc.); other family; friends; and, his beloved German Shepherd Zoey. He was predeceased by parents Matt (Metro) and Lena Grona.

Patrick was known as a great storyteller and conversationalist and could entertain just about anybody with the exploits from both his youth and present. He was also known as a great tease and those closest to him knew it was a sign of great endearment to be on the receiving end of his taunts. He had many passions during his lifetime which included camping with family and friends at Arrow Lake, traveling to visit his daughter in Winnipeg or Toronto, spending time in his backyard by the two ponds he built from scratch with his wife, visiting warm weather locations where he took great pleasure in scuba diving, and of course, his great love of food.

Patrick took great pride in his trade of flooring. A skill he learned in his early 20s from his father. For many years he worked along side his brother and father as a professional flooring installer at Otto and Bayne. In 2002, the brothers Grona realized their own dream and opened M&P Flooring. Along the years, many family members, friends and dedicated staff contributed to the success of the store for which he was grateful. He was especially delighted when wife Mary Anne joined the business full-time as its operations lead in 2007.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff and care givers at St. Joseph’s Hospice, Bayshore Home Health, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, and Regional Cancer Care for their care and support. As expressions of sympathy, memorials to the Canadian Cancer Society, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation (Northern Cancer Fund), St. Joseph’s Foundation of Thunder Bay or the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
